Abstract

Although women have been increasingly integrated into boxing over the past thirty years, boxing is still widely considered a primarily male-dominated sport. Female boxers face structural underrepresentation and public scepticism. Media outlets of Olympic sports organizations have the potential to deliberately portray female athletes differently than in the mainstream. This study examines how national Olympic boxing associations portray women in their Instagram accounts and identifies the country-specific conditions, values, and discourses that shape this portrayal. Drawing on the theoretical background of Cultural and Gender Media Studies, the representation practices and production conditions of these associations are analysed using qualitative content analysis of 450 Instagram posts and guided interviews with social media managers from the German Boxing Association, England Boxing, and the Russian Boxing Federation.

The quantitative representation of women in boxing varies greatly, with the German and English associations conveying a more balanced gender ratio than the Russian association. Qualitatively, country-specific patterns emerge in the portrayal of female boxers. These differences reflect significant differences in the underlying social discourses and the importance of material resources, levels of professionalization, and strategic goals.
